I am currently in my freshmen at Chandler High School. I started to be involved with the Si Se Puede Foundation since I was in 3rd grade. The Si Se Puede Foundation has given me many opportunities such as tutoring, and robotics. In the future I would like to major in Chemical Engineering, or become a lawyer. In my future I would like to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I continued to keep myself involved with the Si Se Puede by helping elementary students with their homework, and junior high students on the FLL (First Lego League) and N.U.R.C. (National Underwater Robotics Competition. My purpose of joining the program would be to improve as a student and as a responsible human being. On Saturday’s I keep myself busy by helping the students with their math, science, building and communication skills. I have chosen to help students on Saturday morning instead of sleeping in because I feel like I can make in impact in their lives just like previous mentors made an impact in my life. I want to show the young student how to prepare for the future and show them how the real world works, for instance showing them how to work as a team even if one of the team members don’t get along. In the Si Se Puede Robotics Program the kids have great potential, I hope to achieve huge accomplishments in the future as an individual and as a team. There are many things we would love to be the rookie team that learns so much along the way, because we’re aiming pretty high because of the support we are given. I am a strong, caring, hardworking individual that with the help of such a supportive team that will achieve many great things this fall.

Dhruv Iyer

Hello, my name is Dhruv Iyer. I am a sophomore at Hamilton High School, and  have been doing robotics and computer programming for as long as I can remember. My very first “hello world” program was in Scratch when I was in the first grade, and I have never stopped growing in my abilities. These days, I coach a Lego Robotics team in association with the Si Se Puede Foundation. My other passion competing in Science Fairs. I enjoy the scientific discovery and innovation aspects, and it has allowed me to meet famous people including members from the Naval Research Laboratory, National Science Advisory Council, the NIH, as well as President Barack Obama. In the future, I hope to become a research professor and continue exploring science and technology.

At 14 years old, I am currently a freshman who attends Hamilton High School. I have been involved with the Si Se Puede Foundation since I was in the 6th grade, making this my third year. I first saw this program as a way to spend my empty Saturdays; I was the kid that slept in until 3 pm on all the days that school attendance wasn’t required. 6th grade me would have groaned at the idea of getting up at 9 am to attend something I didn’t have to, but over time that changed. Now, 9th grade me loves coming there on Saturdays. There is something satisfactory in seeing success in the kids that I mentor. In the program, I teach kids basic calculus and help them build robots. In the future, I would like to attend Arizona State University and major in Computer Engineering. My purpose for staying in this program is to help create a spark in the kids that the mentors did for me 3 years ago. I want to show them that they can achieve their goals and help them create a future for themselves. Most kids don’t even know what they want to be when they grow up; this program is meant to guide them and help them reach their dreams. We also teach them important life skills, such as teamwork and public speaking. A lot of the time, kids don’t learn these skills in regular schooling, so when it comes time to use them, they aren’t sure what to do. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t just the kids that are learning; I am still a rookie at times and I learn with them. I try my best to be dilige nt yet confident, and I hope to achieve many things over the next year.

Robert Frame

I am a both a team member of the Binary Bots, and a veteran member of the CHS Robowolves. Last year, I joined the Chandler High School robotics team and discovered my current passion; as a rookie on that team, I was given a leadership position, and I utilized that opportunity to absorb as much information as I could. Through the Robowolves, I was introduced to the Si Se Puede program, and I became a mentor involved with the foundation. It was immediately clear to me that that all involved with this nonprofit organization are dedicated and altruistic people. Throughout the year, I continued to volunteer with their LEGO Robotics organization, and I do so currently as well. By working as a machinist at AZ Part Source during the summer, I gained experience that was paramount in achieving my current station. At my summer job, I learned the importance of precision and design evaluation. Currently, I am in charge of partnerships for the Robowolves team. I am also enrolled in a software engineering class, and I am attempting to learn Java programming in my spare time. The experience I have gained will aid both the Binary Bots and myself in this year’s FRC challenge. After graduating from high school this year, I plan on attending ASU for their engineering program.

Saahil Poonawala

I am a 15-year-old student currently in 10th grade at Hamilton High School. I am currently taking four AP, or Advanced Placement, classes and I am a high academic achiever. I am a varsity member of the Hamilton High School Speech and Debate team, competing in a public speaking event called Original Oratory. In various tournaments for this team, I have succeeded in reaching semifinal and final rounds. I joined the Si Se Puede program, in 2014, primarily as a mentor for presentation skills and project development for students from fourth to eighth grade. These students are competing in the FLL, or FIRST Lego League, competition in December. One component of this competition is their presentation of a project which they develop based on the theme of the competition that year. This is the portion of the competition I primarily work with students on. I competed in the FLL competition in 2010, and have returned to mentor students through the Si Se Puede foundation. I enjoy helping these students pursue their interest in robotics and engineering and succeed in this competition. In the future, I would like to pursue a career in engineering. In my free time, I enjoy watching and playing football and soccer. I train in freestyle karate every week. However, most of my time is dedicated to preparing for competitions for my high school Speech and Debate team, which has won multiple tournaments in the last year alone.
